Does anyone know when private number plates first came into being? It could be argued that they started when the very first vehicle registrations were issued in 1903. Both A1 in England and S1 in Scotland were acquired by motoring enthusiasts who waited all night to ensure they got them. If they were around today they would be amazed to see how much those registrations are worth, nearly half a million pounds!
